Gélia Geral (General Jelly) refers to Brazilian culture as an amorphous confusion of contradictory parts, in particular the age-old (and ongoing) dilemmas of jungle and city, plantation and factory, tropical and modern, and has become an iconic representation of the Tropicália agenda (and other strands of the Brazilian avant-garde). Patriotic literary clichés roll out from the onset, iconic authors are quoted and parodied, and then the song descends into a jumbled montage of snippets of the mundane and every day.
