With the declaration of Institutional Act 5 on 13 December 1969 the military government assumed naked dictatorial powers and exercised them. They began by placing Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil under arrest, then house arrest in Salvador, then exile in London for three years. While in Salvador in 1969 they recorded climactic Tropicália records, in which Rogério was intimately involved, and to which he contributed lyrics for the most esoteric word and sound collage ‘songs’, Gil’s Objeto semi-identificado and Veloso’s Acrilyrico, and a cover design featuring his own elusive poetry for Gil.
